Week 1:
The Origins of the Idea of Europe Class 1: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Holy Roman Empire Class 1: Middle Ages, Reformation, Renaissance and the Conquest of America
Week 2:
Revolutions and Enlightenment Class 2: Scientific Revolution Class 2: Industrial Revolution, Enlightenment and French Revolution
Week 3:
Colonialism and Nationalism Class 3: Romantic Nationalism and Colonialism Class 3: The World Wars
Week 4:
The Establishment of the European Union Class 4: The creation of the EU to present day Class 4: The creation of the EU to present day and Q&A.

Course Objectives: The course European Thought and Culture provides an overview of the historical and intellectual developments in Europe from 5 century B.C until the establishment of the European Union. It aims to inform its participants with some general knowledge on various social, political and cultural developments. During the lectures, the participants encounter different concepts and ideas which still play a pivotal role in shaping contemporary Europe. Overall, the course European Thought and Culture endeavours to make people better understand the politics, culture, society and the global position of the twenty-first century Europe.
Teaching and Assessment Method: The tutor explains the scheduled topics during the live and interactive ZOOM sessions. The students are encouraged to participate and ask questions. Course materials are provided by the tutor.
